Rivercity Players

Our mission: enriching the creative culture of the community  through the performing arts.

Director Susan Wydenes wanted to bring some light and laughter to Rivercity Stage at this dark and dreary time of year, and she found the perfect play for that in Norm Foster's

Halfway There.

The small town of Stewiacke, Nova Scotia is located exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Into this town wanders Doctor Sean Merrit, newly dumped by his fiancée and looking to leave his troubles far behind. The first people he meets are four local women,

each with issues of their own. The play opens February 23rd with performances through March 4th.

We asked Susan to share more about the play, and also about how she became a part of Rivercity Players.

How would you describe the play?

Susan Wydenes: This is a play about love: the enduring love between dear friends and the love off romantic relationships, both new and long-established.

Why did you want to bring this play to Rivercity Stage?

SW: This is a relatable play that celebrates what is essential in life: friendship, love, laughter and being there for each other, through all of lifes ups and downs. It is heartwarming, witty and funny and I thought it would be a welcome reprieve for our audience during these last weeks of our often wet and dreary winter.

What is your favourite thing about the play and/or the production?

SW: My favourite thing is watching these characters and relationships come to life through the hard work and thoughtful exploration of the actors.

Why should people come see the show?

SW: This play will make you laugh and probably also cry. It is a hopeful play that nudges us all to remember what is most important in life: each other.

How long have you been involved with Rivercity Players?

SW: Off and on for about 20 years.

What made you want to be involved in community theatre?

SW: I wanted to try acting and I wanted to be part of a creative group.

What past productions have you been involved in (either with Rivercity or otherwise)?

SW: Cocktails at Pam's, 84 Charing Cross Road, Steel Magnolias, a handful of one act plays and various off-stage roles in other productions.

What was your most memorable theatre experience?

SW: So far, I think that would be directing Steel Magnolias. The cast was amazing to work with.

What do you like most about directing?

SW: I love watching how the actors interpret their characters and then bringing them together into a cohesive unit under my vision for the story.

Other than directing, what other roles you enjoy taking on in a theatre production?

SW: I also enjoy acting, set dressing and publicity.

What things keep you busy when you're not involved in theatre?

SW: Walking with friends and dogs, knitting, outdoor adventures and spending time with family.

Announcing auditions for our spring production of Four Old Broads by Leslie Kimbell, directed by Tim Myerscough.

The play is Rivercity’s entry into the annual North Island Zone Festival, which we are delighted to be hosting this May.

The comedy is set in Magnolia Place Assisted Living, where retired burlesque queen Beatrice Shelton desperately needs a vacation – and NOT another trip up to Helen, Georgia to see that “precious little German village for the umpteenth time.” A Sassy Seniors Cruise through the Caribbean may be just the ticket if she can just convince her best friend, Eaddy Mae Clayton, to stop praying and go with her. Unfortunately, things have not been very pleasant at Magnolia Place Assisted Living since Nurse Pat Jones began working there. A mystery unfolds with laughter as the gals try to outsmart the evil Nurse Pat Jones and figure out why so many residents have been moved to “the dark side.”

Auditions will be held Monday January 30th from 6:30-9:30pm at Rivercity Stage, 1080 Hemlock Street. Call backs will be Wednesday February 1st from 6:30-9:30pm. Director Tim Myerscough is seeking 4 women 60+, 2 women 30-40, 1 man 60+, as well as 1 man and 1 woman 30+ for Offstage TV show voices.

Rehearsals will begin in March and will be held Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-9pm. Performances will be April 26-30 and May 4-6. An additional performance date will be announced once the zone festival schedule is finalized.

Rivercity Players is happy to announce two workshops to be held in the new year.

First up is Introduction to Play Production. This workshop will introduce you to all the non-acting roles in a production – and there are many! From producer to set design to props – you will learn what each of these jobs involves, and how they interrelate. This workshop is perfect for those who want to be involved and don’t want to be on the stage – or for actors who want to expand their horizons! The workshop will be held Wednesday, January 11th at Rivercity Stage. Register here

Later in the month will be Introduction to the Tech Booth. This workshop will provide more information on sound and lighting, and what goes on in the tech booth. It will include an introduction to the equipment we use. It will also give our technicians an opportunity to get to know those who have expressed interest in this area, and find out what their experience and specific interests are. This workshop will be held Wednesday, January 25th at the theatre. Register here

Both events will start at 5:15 (pizza, anyone?), with the workshop itself starting at 5:30.

Absolutely no experience required! You don’t have to be a member of RCP to attend – if you have friends that may be interested, please pass on the information.

You can register for either/both of these free workshops by visiting our tickets and event page at www.rivercitytickets.ca
